Want to keep your brain sharp as you age? Dig in to a book. Reading is an active mental exercise that requires you to use your brain, concentrate and focus. Research shows that regular reading habits have tons of benefits like:

  • Improved concentration
  • Increased empathy
  • Slowed memory loss
  • Better vocabulary
  • Improved mood

Books can also help you put some stress to rest. According to a 2009 study by the University of Sussex, just six minutes of reading can reduce stress a whopping 68%.

Make time throughout your week to read. Put your cell phone and other electronics away and pick a location where you won’t be distracted. Just 30 minutes with a book can have long lasting benefits.  If you’re having a hard time getting back into the swing of reading, try these tips:

  • Read out loud
  • Pick one special time each day to read
  • Read throughout the day
