Spending time with friends is fun and healthy for you! People with strong connections to family, friends and co-workers have stronger immune systems, lower rates of anxiety and depression and higher self-esteem.
There are tons of ways to broaden your social circle and stay connected, no matter what stage of life you’re in. Try these:
- Enjoy lunch with friends
- Pick up the phone
- Join a gym
- Be friendly
- Take a class
- Adopt a pet
- Become a mentor
It’s not always easy to stay social, especially as we grow older or schedules become busier. But the benefits to your health can’t be overlooked! Here are some ways we motivate ourselves to stay social:
- Make plans ahead. Schedule social activities in advance so you’re less likely to cancel.
- Have a standing date. Whether it is a weekly class, soccer practice or a walk with a neighbor, make sure you plan regular activities that require you to leave the house.
- Be a responsible volunteer. If you’re going to donate your time to an organization don’t just show up whenever you feel like it. Sign up for specific tasks and times. You’ll get more out of the experience if you know people are counting on you.
- Find balance. Don’t feel bad if you’d rather stay home sometimes and relax. We all need time alone. Just make sure you find a healthly balance between quiet and company.
