Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and we’re working to raise awareness of the disease and its potentially life-altering health complications. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a growing epidemic, affecting 25.8 million Americans. However, 27 percent of these people are not even aware they have the disease.

Could you be at risk for diabetes? There are many factors that increase your risk, including:

  • Having siblings with diabetes
  • Being age 45 or older
  • Being overweight
  • Getting little or no exercise daily
  • Being African-American, Hispanic, Native-American or Pacific-Island descent
  • Women previously having gestational diabetes or giving birth to an infant weighing more than 9 pounds

If you have diabetes or are worried about your risk of getting diabetes, The Diabetes Treatment Center at Parkview Hospital Randallia helps patients understand their risk factors for developing diabetes and identify common warning signs. The center also offers many outpatient services like insulin therapy, glucose monitoring and self-management skills training to help patients manage their diabetes.
